Meaning and place in Easter

For Orthodox Christians, Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is part of the Holy Week leading to Easter, the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection. Bulgaria’s public-holiday calendar ties the date to the Easter celebrations for each year, so it moves rather than falling on one fixed date.[1][3]

How it is observed

Accounts published by the Bulgarian Orthodox Patriarchate describe services in Sofia that include the Royal Hours and Vespers, during which the Holy Shroud, depicting Christ laid in the tomb, is brought from the altar and placed in the center of the church. On Good Friday evening, a burial service features hymns around the Shroud; worshippers may follow it in a procession around the church and pass beneath it.[3]

These descriptions document services at particular churches, rather than a schedule followed identically by every parish. Anyone wishing to attend should check the local church’s service times. The central images of the day are the Cross, the Shroud and Christ’s burial, with worship looking ahead to Easter.[3]

Public holiday and work

The Bulgarian Labour Code lists Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday and Monday as public holidays. It also says that employees who work on a public holiday must receive at least double their agreed remuneration, whether or not the work counts as overtime.[1][2]

The Code’s general rule for substitute non-working days when public holidays fall on a weekend expressly excludes Easter. The Council of Ministers’ holiday webpage states more generally that a public holiday falling on a weekend is followed by one or two non-working business days. For Easter, the Code’s specific exception applies.[1][2]
