The surrender and independence

The date recalls the surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka on December 16, 1971. The Liberation War Museum records that General A. A. K. Niazi signed the instrument of surrender at the Race Course, acknowledging Bangladesh as a free, independent and sovereign state.[3]

For Bangladesh, Victory Day marks the culmination of the struggle for independence. It is distinct from Independence and National Day, which Bangladesh observes on March 26.[4]

A public holiday in Bangladesh

The Ministry of Public Administration publishes an official annual holiday notice, and the Armed Forces Division describes Victory Day as a public holiday.[1][2] Bangladesh Bank’s holiday circular lists December 16 as a one-day holiday for scheduled banks; check your bank for its own service arrangements.[5]

Government holiday notices place the holiday on December 16. The Bangladesh Labour Act separately provides for paid festival holidays for workers, with the employer setting the dates; if a worker is required to work on a festival holiday, the law provides for an alternative day off and compensatory wages.[1][6]

Commemorations and events

The Bangladesh Tourism Board describes tributes to martyrs at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar and commemorative activities across the country. It also identifies military parades, meetings, speeches, lectures, receptions and fireworks as elements of Victory Day observances.[4]

The Armed Forces Division’s description includes prayers at armed-forces mosques, flag hoisting, wreath-laying at the National Mausoleum and a national day parade in Dhaka.
