A public holiday on May 1

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Public Administration publishes annual government holiday notices, and May Day is observed on May 1 without a substitute day listed.[1] A Bangladesh news report has also described the day as a declared public holiday.[2]

The public-holiday notice does not by itself establish that every workplace, shop or service closes. The Bangladesh Labour Act says employers set the dates for workers’ paid festival holidays; it also provides a substitute day off and two days’ compensatory wages when a worker is required to work on one of those holidays.[3] The cited section does not specifically name May Day.

Meaning and historical background

In Bangladesh, May Day is a day to recognize working people’s contribution and raise concerns about their rights, fair wages, dignity and working conditions.[2] It is also observed internationally in memory of workers who died in Chicago in 1886 while seeking an eight-hour working day.[2]

How the day is observed

A nationwide account of a recent May Day observance described rallies, discussions and seminars involving government officials, workers, trade unions, political parties and social organizations.[2] In Dhaka, groups held rallies and processions at city locations; district observances reported in the same account included rallies and discussion meetings.[2]

The events described included public discussion of fair wages, workers’ dignity and improved conditions. The report also recorded a discussion organized by Bangladesh Islamic Foundation on labor’s dignity and workers’ rights in Islam, followed by a prayer gathering.[2] These are examples from a reported observance, rather than a fixed national program.

What to expect for services

The annual government holiday notice is a useful reference for official closures, but it does not establish a universal schedule for banks, shops, transport or private employers on May Day.[1][2] Check directly with a workplace or service provider before making plans.
