A national holiday with movable-date rules

Argentina’s Law 27,399 lists October 12 as a movable national holiday. If it falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday, it moves to the previous Monday; if it falls on a Thursday or Friday, it moves to the following Monday.[1]

A 2025 decree also allows movable national holidays that fall on Saturday or Sunday to be shifted to the immediately following Monday or the preceding Friday, as determined by the relevant authority.[3] The government’s annual holiday calendar is the place to check which date applies in a particular year.[4]

The national holiday framework applies throughout Argentina. The law provides that days moved under its rules carry the same pay rights as national holidays. For workers covered by the Employment Contract Law, national holidays follow Sunday-rest rules; employees who work receive their normal pay plus an equal amount.[1][5]

Why the name changed

Until 2010, October 12 was known in Argentina as the Day of the Race and commemorated Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. The government describes the later renaming as a shift away from commemorating the conquest toward considering and valuing the many cultures that have contributed to Argentine identity.[2]

The day’s stated purpose is to encourage historical reflection and intercultural dialogue, and to recognize and respect Indigenous peoples in Argentina. It gives the date a specifically Argentine focus: examining the country’s history and cultural identity while acknowledging its Indigenous peoples.[2]

Observance and local activities

The official description emphasizes reflection, dialogue and recognition rather than setting out one required ceremony or custom. Educational or cultural activities may offer ways to engage with the day, but there is no single nationwide programme, customary food or uniform regional practice established here.[1][2]

The law calls for government campaigns to promote historical reflection and awareness of the sociocultural value of commemorative national holidays. Check local cultural institutions or municipal announcements for activities in a particular place.[1]

What to expect on the holiday

Banks include the date in their official annual holiday schedules. The Central Bank says that its online banking, mobile banking, ATMs, electronic wallets and card payments can be used during banking holidays, although branch services follow the published calendar.[6]

A national holiday does not by itself establish the opening hours of every shop, attraction or transport service. Hours can depend on the provider and location, so travelers should check directly before making plans.[1][6]
