A public holiday under Albanian law

Albania’s official holiday calendar lists Nevruz on March 22. The Labour Code says work is generally prohibited on public holidays and employees retain their pay; exceptions may be set by government decision or collective agreement. If a public holiday falls on the weekly rest day, the rest day moves to Monday.[1][3]

The General Directorate of Industrial Property’s calendar shows how the rule affects its own offices: it lists Nevruz and says an official holiday falling on a weekend is observed on the following working day. The Bank of Albania also lists Nevruz among its holidays and specifies its closure on the following working day when the holiday falls on a weekend. Bektashi meaning and spring renewal

The World Bektashi Headquarters describes Nevruz as “New Day,” a name of Persian origin. For Bektashi believers, Sultan Nevruz honors Imam Ali’s birth and is associated with the renewal of life, hope, peace and the arrival of spring. These are beliefs of the communities that observe the day, rather than a uniform practice among all Albanians or Muslims.[2]

The observance also has connections to the wider Nevruz tradition celebrated in several countries. In Albania, its particular place comes from Bektashi religious history and the community’s institutions.[2]

Prayer, greetings and family customs

The Bektashi Headquarters describes believers gathering for prayer at its Tirana headquarters and at Bektashi tekkes, wearing their best clothes and exchanging good wishes. Its account also mentions a ceremonial song and drinking a glass of milk as a symbol of a new day. Practices can differ among families and communities.[2]

Food traditions include byrek made with herbs, sometimes with a coin baked inside; the person who finds the coin is considered lucky. The Headquarters also describes milk-based sweets and other festive dishes. In Krujë, it records older customs in which family meals, visits to sacred places and gatherings for women and young brides took place on different days. These examples describe traditions reported by the institution, not a required observance for every Bektashi household.[2]

Albania’s National Tourism Agency says it organizes religious, educational and cultural activities and that visitors can learn about Bektashi rituals, traditions and heritage there.[4]

The Headquarters has announced ceremonies and visitor receptions for Sultan Nevruz, but arrangements can vary. Travelers interested in attending should check with the institution before visiting and follow its guidance at religious sites.[2][4]

Planning for the holiday

Public agencies and banks may close or shift their closure when Nevruz falls on a weekly rest day. The legal rule does not establish that every shop, transport service or visitor attraction closes, and the calendars cited here cover particular institutions.
