Celebrating Our Lady of Meritxell: Andorra's National Day

Every year on September 8, Andorra marks its national holiday honoring Our Lady of Meritxell, the nation's beloved patron saint. Thousands of pilgrims travel to the iconic sanctuary designed by Ricardo Bofill to participate in solemn religious ceremonies. This historic day combines deep cultural devotion with national identity and festive community gatherings across the valleys.

History

According to legend, on January 6 in the late 12th century, villagers discovered a blooming wild rose out of season with a statue of the Virgin and Child at its base. Despite attempts to move the statue to churches in Canillo and Encamp, it repeatedly returned to the exact same rose bush. The original Romanesque statue and its chapel were tragically destroyed by a fire on September 8, 1972, but a magnificent new basilica designed by architect Ricardo Bofill was completed in 1976.

Traditions & Food

September 8 marks both the religious feast day and the Andorran National Day, featuring official ceremonies, folk dances, and family gatherings. Traditional Andorran cuisine takes center stage, with hearty mountain dishes such as escudella stew, trinxat, and local cured meats served in homes and restaurants.

Closures & Travel

As a major national holiday, banks, government offices, and most commercial establishments remain closed, while public transport operates on holiday schedules. Visitors should expect large crowds near the Meritxell Basilica in Canillo and book accommodations well in advance if planning travel during this festive period.
